Waiting for spring to.. sprung?

Last year the monkey and I had a small impromptu garden in our backyard.  The people we purchased our house from had nothing but grass in the backyard, so it was a lot of work to turn over just a small plot.  Despite our lateness to the party, we actually got a decent yield.  No thanks to the evil squirrels and crafty chickens.

We had a lot of tomatoes and cucumbers, only a few peppers, but no squash (damn you squirrels!).

And I started beets and carrots, which the chickens got to as seedlings, and so those never happened (damn chickens).  We have to put up a barrier between the chickens, who roam our backyard, and anything we don't want them to completely devastate - because they will.

Now this year, we are going to go all out.  We are going to plant a white mulberry in the back (half for us, half for the chickens; it's like crack to them, they loved our neighbors tree until it was cut down).  There is also going to be a much more extensive garden this year.  Cherry tomatoes and lettuce to be grown on the porch.  Beets (dark and bullseye) tomatoes, squash, cucumbers are starting now.

The challenge is to keep the squirrels out of everything.  Especially the window boxes with the lettuce.  I hate those squirrels. I will solve them as a problem this year.  But it's starting and I'm so excited!
